“The Montelena Way”: Classic, Consistent Style

October 6th, 2010

Sonoma’s Press Democrat has an excellent feature on the Chateau Montelena vineyard, honing in on the vineyard’s longstanding tradition of staying classic instead of jumping onto every new wine trend, something that wine drinkers appreciate now more than ever.

“‘The classics never go out of style,’ [Bo] Barrett noted. ‘We learned that lesson with chardonnay. The pendulum swings, just stick to our style and not be afraid of where the mob is going. There’s also a place for properly made red wines. You’ve got to stick to what you know best. We have a 50-year plan, not 10.’”

The key to future success? Sticking with that plan. Says Barrett,

“I like the art, and all of us are superstitious,” Barrett concedes, “but I believe in the science.”
