VINTUS Named New U.S. Importer of Tommasi

Top Amarone Brand Joins VINTUS’ Portfolio of Benchmark Wines

VINTUS Acquires Rolar Imports as Part of Tommasi Partnership

(Pleasantville, NY; January 20, 2012) — VINTUS, a leading national fine wine importer and marketing company, and Tommasi, the renowned producer of Amarone and Valpolicella Classico in Italy’s Veneto region, are delighted to announce that they have entered into a long-term distribution agreement, granting VINTUS the responsibility for the exclusive sales and marketing of Tommasi wines in the United States. In a related transaction, VINTUS has purchased Rolar Imports, U.S. importer of Tommasi wines for the past thirty-nine years.

Founded in 1902 in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico, Tommasi is one of the standard bearers of the Amarone appellation, and one of the most important quality producers in the Veneto generally.  The Tommasi family is the single largest landowner in the Valpolicella Classico area; over the past 110 years, they have steadily expanded their holdings in other areas of the Veneto, and now own a total of 370 acres in the region.  As has been the case since the winery’s establishment, the family works only with grapes they grow, an important quality decision and a reflection of their deep connection to the Valpolicella soil.

“We are extremely pleased to develop this new relationship with VINTUS, and to work with them to increase the presence of our family’s wines in top restaurants and wine shops in the United States,” said Dario Tommasi, co-owner along with his brothers Sergio, Ezio, and Franco.

“It is an especially exciting time for our family: we are celebrating our 110-year anniversary and are seeing the benefits from a number of recent investments and innovations in our vineyards and winery. We believe that Michael Quinttus and his dynamic team at VINTUS are uniquely qualified to enhance the visibility of our wines to the next generation of American consumers. The Tommasi family thanks our dear friends Paul Lardi and Marvin Rosenberg of Rolar Imports for 39 years of successful collaboration.”

VINTUS, founded in 2004, is a national importer and marketing company for leading fine wine estates around the world.  VINTUS President and founder Michael Quinttus commented: “The Tommasi family has a tremendous commitment to preserving and sharing the traditions of Valpolicella, and leading the Veneto region into the future.  Amarone is a special and rare contribution to the world of wine, unique to the Veneto, and it is a privilege to enter into this partnership with one of Italy’s great producers.”

Tommasi is now run by the fourth generation of the family, a group of six siblings and cousins who share responsibilities at the family properties and other holdings.  In addition to the Veneto estate vineyards and winery, the Tommasi family also has two properties in the Maremma totaling 225 acres: Poggio al Tufo purchased in 1997 and located in Pitigliano an hour north of Rome, and Doganella, a more recent purchase neighboring Poggio al Tufo and dedicated entirely to the organic cultivation of grapes.

Patrick Will: Hospice du Rhone 2011 Person of the Year!

May 2nd, 2011

We are thrilled to announce that at the Hospice du Rhone this weekend in Paso Robles, Patrick Will was named the 2011 person of the year.  This tremendous recognition comes in light of  Patrick’s longtime involvement with the event, California’s Central Coast,  and the wines of Guigal.  Patrick is extraordinarily deserving of this award, and  nothing we could write touches on Patrick’s integrity and passion as well as the profile in the Hospice du Rhone program announcing his recognition.   You can download the piece by clicking on the article icon just below,  or read the full text below the icon.

Our person of the year for Hospice du Rhone 2011 continues a string of magnificently generous, devoted, committed individuals who we are certain never gave a thought to being ‘recognized’ for doing what, to them, just comes naturally.  Unassuming and quietly omnipresent, Patrick Will is a very special someone who selflessly, but very personally, enhances every attendee’s HdR experience.

After completing his Masters in Musicology at Cornell University in 1982, Patrick taught Music and English there until 1986, when he entered the wine trade full time after moving to Boston.  In 1987 he was named “Grand Wizard of California Wine” by a trade group seeking the most “California wine-knowledgeable” retail or restaurant employee in the US.  Patrick moved to Santa Barbara County, California, in 1987 to manage the sales at Firestone Vineyard, and became General Manager thereof in 1989.  He served as President of the Board of Santa Barbara County Vintners’ Association from 1991 through 1994.  In 1996 Patrick, along with his wife Donna, joined Frederick Eck to form Ex Cellars Wine Agencies, Inc.  In October of 2010 Ex Cellars passed on the distribution of E. Guigal wines to VINTUS, LLC and Patrick became Vice President of Brand Management and Development at VINTUS.

VINTUS and E. GUIGAL are pleased to announce they have entered into a long-term distribution agreement granting VINTUS the responsibility for the exclusive sales and marketing of GUIGAL wines in the United States.  In a related transaction, VINTUS has purchased the assets of former GUIGAL importer Ex Cellars Wines Agencies.

VINTUS, founded in 2004, is a national importer and marketing company for leading fine wine estates around the world.   VINTUS President and founder Michael Quinttus commented: “It is an honor and the fulfillment of a long dream to now represent the wines of GUIGAL, the leading producer in the Rhone Valley and one of the world’s iconic brands.   Adding GUIGAL and other Ex Cellars producers such as Baumard, Philipponnat, François Lurton, D. Milhade, Château de Beauregard, Talmard and Dog Point to our portfolio is a seamless extension of our efforts to offer wine lovers and our distributor, retail and restaurant partners the finest wines in the world.”

Marcel and Philippe Guigal, with a fanatical devotion to quality and terroir, have set the highest production standards in the region, ranging from best-value Côtes du Rhônes to once-in-a-lifetime single-vineyard bottles such as La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne from Côte-Rôtie.  Reflecting on the transition to VINTUS after working for more than 40 years with importer Fred Ek, founder of Ex Cellars, Marcel and Philippe stated:  “We will be eternally grateful to Fred Ek for introducing our wines to the U.S. in the 1960’s.  Fred, Patrick and their team have given American wine lovers access to our wines for decades.  We have also known and respected Michael for many years, and have watched as the VINTUS organization has developed.  We believe his company is the natural next home for GUIGAL.”

According to Fred Ek, co-owner of Ex Cellars: “After so many years working with GUIGAL and my other friends in France, successively in retail, wholesale with Classic Wine Imports and finally Ex Cellars, it is a pleasure to pass them along to Michael Quinttus.” Patrick Will, co-owner of Ex Cellars, will become Vice President, Brand Management & Development at VINTUS.  He adds, “it has been a pleasure and an honor to work with Fred and these wonderful producers for 14 years.  I look forward to being part of what has undoubtedly become one of the very top fine wine portfolios in the country.”

VINTUS Newsletter: The new black is, well, BLACK

September 21st, 2010

As the weather cools down, we’re thrilled to take the lid off one of the most exciting developments in our portfolio, introduced earlier this year, and appropriate after a few weeks of cooler weather.

It’s Noval BLACK.

When you look at the crème de la crème of the port world, Quinta do Noval stands out for several important reasons – most important of all, it has a singular focus on site.  Noval is one vineyard and its vintage ports, aged tawnies and LBV come from this one vineyard.  Noval’s determined and unique efforts to build all their winemaking, storage and shipping facilities at the vineyard underlie an obsession with vineyard over port-making process, and a very different, terroir-driven approach.

Noval perched above the Douro and Pinhao Rivers, the very heart of the Douro's finest area

In 1994, Christian Seely directed the effort of Noval’s new owners to re-plant two-thirds of its vineyards and build the facilities mentioned above, all of which over the previous decade had fallen into disrepair.  Without trying to exaggerate, the quality of fruit growing at Noval today is unprecedented in the Douro.  If you’ve tasted some of the Noval ports the last few years, you have seen how the LBV, 10 Year Tawny and Vintage Ports are reaching extraordinary heights as this fruit makes its way into the wines.  Two years ago, Noval decided they wanted to bottle a wine that encapsulates their site-based approach, their tremendous vineyard, and allows people to enjoy a great glass of port without having to wait two decades for their vintage port to age.  They found that in making a port this way, they ended up with a completely new style of port.  BLACK steps away from the traditional, stodgy categories of port – it has bright aromatics, tremendous freshness, and we like to say it is so balanced that it drinks more like a wine.  It’s a port made from top fruit that is aged for a few years in large barrels, which softens it, and is then released.

We love everything about port: the tremendous depth of flavors, history and culture, the fact vines grow on sheer schist and little else, and that the Douro Valley completely captures your heart – it is as wild and beautiful an area as any in the world, and happens to be the home to a unique and extraordinary wine.  We’re working hard to convey our enthusiasm.  Together with Noval, we designed a beautiful, modern yet timeless bottle for BLACK that gives a little bit of the sense of how different this port is than anything else made in the Douro Valley or elsewhere.  Wine & Spirits Magazine recently wrote in reviewing Noval BLACK:

“Christian Seely recently introduced this wine in New York as a rethinking of the super-premium, multivintage Porto style. Black replaces LB, Noval’s former entry in this range, and uses top-quality fruit to create a soft, accommodating texture. The aromas are purple-black while the flavors are pure black cherry. Acidity spices it up and adds to the juiciness of the finish. It’s plump in the middle and supple all the way through, ending on fruit-skin tannin and a touch of chocolate from oak. At the level of many of the region’s best LBVs, this wine may become a staple for a new generation of Port drinkers. 91 Wine & Spirits Magazine

There’s not much more we can say than that, except perhaps that our owner Michael Quinttus, who over his career in the wine business has brought to the US a few wineries you may have heard of (Ornellaia and Cloudy Bay, to name two) believes based on the response we’ve had since our March introduction, Noval BLACK is the single most successful wine introduction he’s ever seen.  BLACK is hitting a nerve, and it’s thrilling for our little fine wine importing company to witness.  Certainly a great source of pride.  Oh, and did I mention BLACK is typically below $15/bottle wholesale?

Finally, this message coincides with the launch of Noval BLACK’s website, here: www.novalblack.com.   You’ll see that we’ve been busy coming up with some great ideas for enjoying BLACK.  Given its profile, it has proven versatile in ways we would never have thought.  You’ll find, for example, some incredible cocktail recipes by New York City’s Jim Meehan on the site (I was bowled over by these, they’re delicious).  Take a look at the site, and you can also find a sneak peak video here:

Bordeaux 2009!

April 19th, 2010

We’re back!  Many things happening, including an update of our website, but we digress…this email is about Bordeaux 2009.  The first wines are being released, and we thought it would be a good time to send out a few thoughts on the vintage.

Many of you have heard the hum building around the 2009 vintage, but a lot of variables are still to fall in place – namely, pricing for the classified growths and the thoughts of Robert Parker.  Plenty of press and trade have made their pronouncements; we’ll try and stick to some nice stories and pictures, with softly worded opinions.

Many people are saying something along the lines of, “while there are exceptional wines, they are not as consistent as 2005”; “some wines were too big”; etc.  Objectively, 2009 is a vintage marked by record or near-record levels of concentration, tannin and alcohol.  As stated previously, we’re not going to make overly authoritative statements, and have no desire to contribute in encouraging higher prices in a still very difficult environment.  After two weeks at home, however, and looking back at our notes, we think there are so many spectacular wines among the top hundred properties.  It will be hard not to view 2009 as a great vintage.   We’re happy at this point in time to lay out the same “ifs” and “buts” as everyone else, but the fruit in these wines is so pure, powerful, complex and long, it’s astounding.  And as everyone has been saying, the producers that made wines of freshness and balance made truly extraordinary wines.  That’s our generalization, take it as you will.

It may come as a surprise to some, but among the very first producers to commit to VINTUS back in 2004 were Christian Moueix, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Cos d’Estournel, and we have been heavily involved in Bordeaux with every vintage campaign since 2003.  Michael has spent a quarter century visiting Bordeaux, returning at least once a year for en-primeur and various other occasions.  We are the exclusive US importer for two of Christian Moueix’ jewels, Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus and Chateau Providence, and work with any number of classified growths as well as properties that offer great value.  In a great vintage, we’ll purchase on futures up to 100 of the properties we feel most confident about in terms of quality and trade and consumer interest.

In subsequent posts you’ll see some more specific commentary, as well as photos from our recent trip to Bordeaux.
