S+S M3 Chardonnay 2008: 91 and Editor’s Choice, Wine Enthusiast

June 14th, 2010

The 2008 Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay has been awarded 91 points and named an “Editor’s Choice” by Wine Enthusiast! A perennial overachiever among Aussie chards, the M3 benefits from the long, cool growing season in the Adelaide Hills, which preserves the tangy acidic backbone that marks the finest expressions of this grape. As Wine Enthusiast says:

“A luscious blend of lime custard and roasted cashew that’s rich without being heavy, and finishes long and clean.” 91 and Editor’s Choice, Wine Enthusiast

Mitolo and Shaw + Smith in Matthew Jukes’ Top 100

May 17th, 2010

Decanter and the Daily Mail’s man in Australia, Matthew Jukes, has published his annual 100 Best Australian Wines, with some spectacular results for Mitolo and Shaw + Smith. In his introduction, Jukes includes Mitolo among just 15 wineries in his inaugural “Hall of Fame,” a distinction awarded for having made the list every year since its inception. That’s a remarkable testament to the quality of Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer’s project, consistently making the best wines in McLaren Vale.

Mitolo Jester Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, McLaren Vale
“Frank Mitolo kindly flew in all of his new releases a few weeks ago for assessment and any one of them could have made this list. After forensic examination, Jester Cab was the champion of the Jester duo, once again, by virtue of the dribble of Serpico that it is kindly allowed to slurp. This inky addition makes Jester’s fruit transcendental in its delivery of cassis, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours. This wine could teach the whole of South America about fruit/oak/alcohol balance such is its impeccable fulcrum of flavours. One more scoop – A 2010 Mitolo Vermentino (!) looked stunning, too. You heard it here first.” Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines

Mitolo Savitar Shiraz 2007, McLaren Vale
“From the Chinese Block in Willunga and named after a mythical dragon whose tail ‘swept the stars from the sky and flung them to the earth’, this is a wine groaning with symbolism and valid hype. Considered to be a lighter vintage and yet easily as gripping and bold as the rich 2006, this is a thrilling wine with clove, woodsmoke, black liquorice and even pastrami notes in its vast panoply of flavours. Mitolo is riding the crest of the wave and perhaps a dragon’s tail, too.” Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines

Shaw + Smith Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Adelaide Hills
“Is this the finest S+S SB ever? An early glimpse at this wine last year suggested that it is and repeated encounters ever since (many such goes, I am fortunate to report) have confirmed this thought. Purity and length are the only two elements worth considering after the flavour boxes have been ticked and this wine excels in both disciplines.” Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines

Shaw + Smith: “Playing against Aussie stereotype”

April 5th, 2010

Wine Spectator has a roundup of “12 Outstanding Australian Reds” up on their site, and critic Harvey Steiman is relishing the way these wines explode the stereotypes that have developed about Aussie wines.

“Whatever your perceptions of Australian red wines, the wines in this group are likely to run counter to them… Shiraz from Adelaide Hills, Heathcote, Yarra and the Hunter Valley play against the Aussie stereotype of honking big structure and ripe flavor. The ones in this group have the ripeness, but they rein it in for a more approachable style.”

Steiman singles out the Shaw + Smith Shiraz as one of the champions of this style from the Adelaide Hills, awarding the 2007 vintage 91 points.

“This silky red is lighter than most Shiraz, creating a deft balance of creamy raspberry and currant flavors against polished tannins, lingering effectively on the refined finish.” 91 Wine Spectator

Shaw + Smith and Mitolo in Vinography

March 31st, 2010

Alder Yarrow of Vinography is on the ground tasting his way through South Australia, running into “some wines that have totally redefined my understanding of what Australian wine is, and can be.” Two of the regional champions he’s singled out are Shaw + Smith and Mitolo. The wines below are recent releases that won’t be available in the US for a while, but the notes give a sense as to the sheer quality being attained these days in the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale.

Shaw + Smith “M3″ Chardonnay 2008
“Light greenish gold in the glass, this wine smells beautifully of lemon zest and cold cream with hints of herbal qualities. In the mouth the wine has a wonderful, stony mineral quality with lemon curd and cold cream touched with sourdough toast with butter. Perfectly balanced and really gorgeous, this is an exceptionally well made wine, and one of the better Chardonnays I’ve had from Australia.” 9-9.5/10 Vinography

Mitolo Serpico Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
“Made entirely from grapes dried in the style of Amarone. Dark garnet in the glass this wine has a nose of dried black cherry and chocolate. In the mouth wonderfully aggressive tannins wrap around black cherry and chocolate flavors with notes of leather that linger in the finish. Intense and interesting. And for being made from dried grapes, quite bright.” 9/10 Vinography

M3 Chardonnay at Lifford Wine Agency

March 24th, 2010

Lifford Wine Agency in Canada has a great little video on the Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay, explaining all the reasons this wine is one of the benchmarks for Aussie whites. The cool climate of the Adelaide Hills leaves this wine with lots of fresh acidity to balance its exotic stone fruit and tropical notes, all rounded out by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith’s subtle use of oak.

Shaw + Smith: Wish You Were Here?

March 16th, 2010

South Australia is a shockingly beautiful place, and Shaw + Smith knows just how to frame it. Check out this view from their tasting room, featured in the latest Decanter.

As for the wines, Matthew Jukes of Decanter and the Daily Mail names Shaw + Smith one of his 20 Top Producers, and has this to say:

“Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw continue to make delicious wines with metronomic precision. The Chardonnay is finer and longer than ever, the Shiraz is savoury and lipsmacking, and their iconic Sauvignon Blanc has never been on better form than in this newly released 2009.”

Shaw + Smith Celebrate 20 Years

February 8th, 2010

2009 was the 20th vintage at Shaw + Smith, a remarkable achievement.  In their first vintage they sourced fruit and a friend lent them some tank space.  Today they have vineyards that are producing some of Australia’s, and the world’s, great Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.  They’ve stuck to  their philosophy all along – to make exciting, modern, cool-climate wines – and have in the last two years perhaps enjoyed more recognition for their efforts than ever before.

Lance Down Under

February 6th, 2010
Cycling legend Lance Armstrong helped expose five South Australian regions to a daily audience of more than 200 million people last week as viewers from around the world watched coverage of the Tour Down Under. Leading industry figures, notably Shaw + Smith’s Michael Hill Smith, have welcomed the international coverage, saying that the cycling event was helping to recognise Australia’s wine regions.  Article Here: Shaw and Smith Decanter 1-25-10
