Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Pomerol

Located on the eastern side of the plateau of Pomerol between Lafleur and Pétrus (hence the name), La Fleur-Pétrus is ideally situated. Acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, in 1994 a 10 acre block originally belonging to Château Le Gay and spreading over a wonderful hillock facing Château Lafleur was added, bringing the vineyard size to 35 acres. Planted on deep gravel that lends elegance and distinction to the wine, the vineyards are planted 80% to Merlot and 20% to Cabernet Franc, including the addition of old Cabernet Franc from the new vineyard parcel. Normal production is about 3,750 cases.

  • 2009 Vintage

    • "A mind-boggling effort, this is the finest La Fleur Petrus I have ever tasted. Layers and layers of black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, truffles, and earth are found in this dense ruby/purple-colored elixir. With extraordinary purity, decent acidity, melted tannins, and massive fruit along with elegance and precision, it should drink well for three decades or more. It is an amazing effort! Bravo to Christian Moueix and his team." 96-98+ Points Wine Advocate

    • "Densely packed and rather backward, displaying charcoal and apple wood notes in front of the core of dense roasted fig, macerated plum and steeped cherry fruit. Th long finish is well-studded with toasted spice and tobacco hints.  Shows terrific underlying grip for the cellar." 97 Points Wine Spectator

    •  "Just across the road from Petrus, la Fleur-Petrus shares some of the same intensity. There is great fruit here, rounded and powerful with the ripest character.  It is open, generous, ready to drink.  The tannins lead into the purest acidity, letting the fruit sing." 96 Points Wine Enthusiast

  • 2008 Vintage

    • "A brilliant effort from this hallowed vineyard sandwiched between La Fleur and Petrus, the 2008 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, kirsch, vanilla, and forest floor. The wine reveals remarkably sweet, ripe tannins, a full-bodied, layered, multidimensional mouthfeel, and a long finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is so silky that this cuvee will be approachable in 3-4 years, and should last for 25+." 92-94+ Points Wine Advocate

    •  "Shows fresh strawberry and cherry aromas, with hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very balanced and pretty." 92-95 Points Wine Spectator

  • 2007 Vintage

    • "Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. A real surprise, this. What a great off-vintage Pomerol from perhaps one of the most underrated addresses. The nose demands a lot of coaxing from the glass: introverted and broody, with blackberry, charcoal, a hint of wild heather and peat. The palate is very well balanced, quite powerful with layers of ripe dark-berried fruits laced with cooked meat, spice, white pepper and a little sage. Firm grip on the finish that tingles enticingly long after the wine has departed. Serious quality for the vintage. Tasted January 2011." 93 Points Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

  • 2006 Vintage

In Bordeaux, 2006 was a vintage of contrasts - a hot summer, followed by a cool and cloudy August, and then a beautiful early September, followed again by rain.  The great advantage for the Moueix properties in Pomerol was that the Merlots had fully ripened and were picked in the early part of September, before the rain.  These fresh, pure Pomerols were unquestionably some of the vintages greatest successes, Château La Fleur-Pétrus included.

    • "Blackberry, spice¿such as cinnamon¿and mineral aromas lead to a full body, with tobacco, chocolate and cedar character. There's lots of milk chocolate and fruit. Very pretty." 92 Points Wine Spectator

    • "Rich, sweet chocolate flavors balance with equally sweet blackberries in this opulent wine. This ripeness goes right through to the heart of the concentrated texture, even the tannins sharing in the generosity. This is a delicious wine, but wait for five years and it will be even better." 93 Points Wine Enthusiast

  • 2005 Vintage

To quote Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix: "A vintage blessed by the gods.  A superb summer, dry and hot, but not excessively so.   Ideal harvest.  A general success for all the varietals and all the appellations."

    • "As one might expect from the Moueix family, this is a classic, traditionally styled Bordeaux exhibiting a deep ruby color, medium body, and a sweet perfume of licorice and kirsch that are reminiscent of a Grenache-based wine from the southern Rhone. However, its elegance, freshness, and high but sweet tannin are unmistakably Bordeaux in style. This 2005 should round into shape in 5-8 years, and keep for a minimum of two decades." 93 Points Wine Advocate

    • "Initially, this seems soft and superripe. But the acidity that shows through balances the black cherry jam flavors, and the touch of mint gives a delicious edge. The aftertaste brings back juicy, ripe fruit." 94 Points Wine Enthusiast

    • "Cool, minerally and fruity, with dark chocolate and olive character. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Velvety and very pretty. This is beautiful and extravagant." 95 Points Wine Spectator

    • "A quiet, confident beauty pervades this wine, just enough to inspire intrigue. It has the elegance and breed of great merlot grown at the top of the Pomerol plateau-this 15-acre vineyard is adjacent to Pétrus and the wine is made by Jean-Claude Berrouet-an intoxicating freshness that integrates all its elements into a liquid bolt of silk. Patterned with violets, black plums and fraise de bois, the flavors buzz with a gentle surety. A pleasure to drink now, this will continue to evolve for two decades or more." 96 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine
