Potter Valley Riesling bottle

Potter Valley Riesling, Potter Valley

Many years ago, Chateau Montelena selected a certified organic vineyard in the Coastal Mendocino Mountains from which, even today, it sources the fruit for the Potter Valley Riesling. The basic winemaking truth—"The Right Grape in the Right Place"—drove that decision then, and it is every bit as valid now. The Riesling grape is a noble variety that requires moderate days and cool nights to allow proper ripening and mature flavor development. Napa Valley's climate is a little too warm for top Rieslings, but Potter Valley's growing conditions are ideal in this regard. Plus, its long and temperate growing season helps to prevent excessive sugar levels that can lead to bitter flavors and high alcohol.

It was a late harvest for the entire north coast, and Potter Valley was no exception. Coming in at the end of October, the Riesling was one of several grapes that contributed to our Halloween theme of “Tired Grubby Cellar Workers.” The late October harvest allowed for excellent time on the vine, full maturity, and just a touch of Botrytis this season – look for the hint of apricot.

Bright golden straw color in the glass, this wonderfully aromatic wine shows layers of floral notes - orange blossom and honeysuckle, along with ripe orange, lime, apricot, and white melon fruits, all accented with sweet clove and nutmeg spice tones. Soft, round and fleshy on the palate, this wine shows a strong acid backbone without pronounced tartness. Rich, smooth, and juicy with nice density throughout, there are layers of white peach, apricot, white melon, and Rangpur lime leading into the long, warm and spicy finish.

  • 2008 Vintage

The wine is bright, brilliant yellow gold in color, an effect of the Botrytis. The nose offers a wafting of perfume, with aromas of honeysuckle, Crenshaw melon, and a very pleasing varietal spice. The blend of flavors follows the nose, with melon and citrus, and moves on to a crisp, clean, refreshing finish. This Chateau Montelena 2008 Potter Valley Riesling can be likened to a Renoir: big, round and fleshy with soft edges; it is elegant, well composed, and utterly enjoyable.
