Ferrer Bobet bottle

Ferrer Bobet, Priorat

Ferrer Bobet is primarily a blend of Carignane and Grenache, from hundred year old vines in some of the best vineyards in Priorat, sourced while their own vineyards mature.  Though the "second wine" of Ferrer Bobet, the initial 2005 release put Ferrer Bobet on the wine world map.  Two of the most important publications in Spain named it their wine of the year, and accolades came pouring in from Russia, the UK and the US.  It launched the Ferrer Bobet mission of creating wines of elegance and purity, and the message has resonated.

  • 2008 Vintage

    • "The 2008 Ferrer/Bobet is a vibrant offering with an expressive nose of cedar, spicy black fruits, exotic spices, and lavender. Only time will tell whether the 2009 is better than this beauty. Ferrer/Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. No expense has been spared in the construction of a magnificent winery and in the planting of the vineyards. Sergi Ferrer-Salat is a young pharmaceutical tycoon with apparently a much greater interest in fine wine than drugs, while his partner Raul Bobet was the long-time winemaker at Torres. Ferrer-Salat makes it clear that his goal is to make the greatest wine possible without regard to whether he makes money. I’m not sure if Bobet would totally agree, but it appears that he is up for the challenge. As for the wines, they are currently made from purchased fruit as the Ferrer-Bobet vineyards are still very young. However, money talks and the winery has been able to access great old-vine Carignan and Grenache fruit, enough so that they might have some difficulty surpassing what they have already achieved when their vineyard matures. Currently two wines are made, the Ferrer/Bobet cuvee and the Seleccio Especial. The 2006s have previously been reviewed, the 2007s are currently in the market, and the 2008s will follow shortly." 96 Points Wine Advocate

  • 2007 Vintage

Ferrer Bobet 2007 is made from Old Carignane (61%), Grenache Noir (37%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%) vines, all planted on steep slate hillsides and terraces.  Grapes are picked by hand into small bins, and selected berry by berry on a double sorting table before being transferred to tanks by gravity.

Fermentation takes place in 15 and 30 Hl wooden and stainless steel tanks, with malolactic fermentation and aging occuring in fine-grained, lightly toasted new French oak barrels for 15 months.  Bottling is unfined and unfiltered, and the wine spent a year in bottle before being released.
    • "The 2007 Ferrer/Bobet is a bit lighter in color displaying aromas of cherry blossom, spicy red fruits, incense, and red licorice. It deftly combines elegance with the power inherent in first class Priorat and will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2022 if not longer. Ferrer/Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. • "A blend of carignan and garnacha, it resolves into gracious depths of sweet flavors, melting into a texture as creamy as a cappuccino. For lamb chops." 92 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine

  • 2006 Vintage

Ferrer Bobet 2006 is made from Old Carignane (70%) and Grenache Noir (30%) vines, all planted on steep slate hillsides and terraces.  Grapes are picked by hand into small bins, and selected berry by berry on a double sorting table before being transferred to tanks by gravity.

Fermentation takes place in 15 and 30 Hl wooden and stainless steel tanks, with Malolactic fermentation and aging occuring in fine-grained French oak barrels for 15 months.  Bottling is unfined and unfiltered, and the wine spent a year in bottle before being released.

    • "There's depth and intensity to the black cherry, pomegranate and dark chocolate flavors in this focused red, which remains graceful and harmonious, with well-integrated tannins and a vibrant finish that's fresh and complex." 93 Points Wine Spectator

    • “The fruit for the 2006 Ferrer Bobet was sourced from 100-year-old Garnacha and Carinena which account for 88% of the blend, the balance being Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of slate/mineral, scorched earth, lavender and roasted black fruits lead to a dense, rich, full-bodied wine with well-concealed ripe tannins.” 92 Points Wine Advocate
  • 2005 Vintage

Ferrer Bobet 2005 is a 53% Carignane, 35% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It was fermented in 15 and 30 hectoliter French oak vessels and stainless steel tanks. The wine then aged 12 months in new and second year French barriques, and was bottled in March 2009 unfined and unfiltered.

    • Sibaritas Wine of the Year 2009: "Above all the freshness seduced the judges of Sibaritas, which set it apart from the majority of reds from Priorat, which are excessively ripe and made to be big wines. On the contrary, the Ferrer Bobet 2005 balanced ripeness with freshness, nobility with succulence, and passion with elegance. Not bad for a debut..."

    • El Mundo Wine of the Year 2008: "The top wine among all the new wines we tasted this year."

    • “Toast and chocolate oak notes frame blackberry and plum fruit in this polished red. Supple and lively, with firm tannins and a smoky, spicy finish. Expressive.” 90 Points Wine Spectator

    • “Spicy red berries and cherry on the nose, with suave nutmeg and cinnamon adding complexity. Light-bodied, fresh red fruit flavors reminded me of pinot noir, as did the silky texture and fine-grained tannins. Clean and understated, with good finishing sweetness and no rough edges. This is drinking nicely right now.” 90 Points International Wine Cellar
