Ferrer Bobet - Selecció Especial, Priorat

Selecció Especial, Priorat
Selecció Especial is primarily Carignane from hundred year old vines in some of the best vineyards in Priorat, sourced while the Ferrer Bobet vineyards mature. These grapes are grown on extremely steep hillsides, are picked by hand, and then sorted berry by berry twice. They are then transferred to tanks by gravity, aged, and then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

"The 2007 Seleccio Especial reveals lilacs, exotic spices, incense, black cherry, and black plum aromas that inform the nose of this savory, elegant, layered, precision Priorat. Give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it from 2013 to 2022. Ferrer/Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. No expense has been spared in the construction of a magnificent winery and in the planting of the vineyards. Sergi Ferrer-Salat is a young pharmaceutical tycoon with apparently a much greater interest in fine wine than drugs, while his partner Raul Bobet was the long-time winemaker at Torres. Ferrer-Salat makes it clear that his goal is to make the greatest wine possible without regard to whether he makes money. I’m not sure if Bobet would totally agree, but it appears that he is up for the challenge. As for the wines, they are currently made from purchased fruit as the Ferrer-Bobet vineyards are still very young. However, money talks and the winery has been able to access great old-vine Carignan and Grenache fruit, enough so that they might have some difficulty surpassing what they have already achieved when their vineyard matures. Currently two wines are made, the Ferrer/Bobet cuvee and the Seleccio Especial. The 2006s have previously been reviewed, the 2007s are currently in the market, and the 2008s will follow shortly." 95 Points Wine Advocate

"Made from a selection of old-vine carignan, this is disguised as an international style of Priorat when first poured, with scents of new oak and sweet fruit. But give it a few hours in the glass and it changes radically, revealing intense ripe cherry flavors along with a pointed acidity that accompanies the fruit from start to finish. The tannic structure is both light and firm, like a spider web made of steel thread." 94 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine

“The 2006 Ferrer Bobet Seleccio Especial is 85% Carinena, 10% Garnacha, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 15 months in new French oak. It reveals a brooding bouquet of mineral, crushed stone, lavender, incense, and black fruit compote. Powerful on the palate, it will mellow a bit with another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink well through 2021.” 94 Points Wine Advocate

“Tangy black raspberry and bitter cherry skin flavors offer impressive clarity and surprising depth, picking up subtle vanillin oak spice with air. Finishes with good lift and a late note of exotic Asian spices. This was raised in 100% new French oak but the effect is barely discernible.” 92 Points International Wine Cellar
