Finca Decero - Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Agrelo

Decero Cabernet Sauvignon, Agrelo

The yields for the plots that go into the Decero Cabernet Sauvignon are around 3.5-4 tons an acres.  Clusters are thinned to 1-2 clusters per shoot, are hand-picked, and then sorted twice.  After maceration and a cold soak, the lots were fermented, and then gently basket pressed before going into French oak (around a third new) for malolactic fermentation and 16 months maturation.

  • 2010 Vintage

The spring leading up to the 2010 vintage was particularly cool with delayed veraison and resulted in lower yields of concentrated fruit with high acidity. The lower yields of Cabernet Sauvignon from this vintage provided more robust, stuctural tannins. This textural definition as well as a taut intensity are in stark contrast to the warmer 2009 vintage. 2010 will be a benchmark vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon from Remolinos Vineyard.

The 2010 is defined by its taut dark fruit and cassis flavors with a hint of tobacco, reminiscent of Bordeaux. The wine has layers of bold tannins and a long, complex finish from ageing in French Oak Barrels. The 2010 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon has great potential for ageing.

    Acidity 5.96 g/l

    pH 3..81

    • "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon - Remolinos Vineyard is aged in new French barriques (30% new) for 14 months. It offers a refined tobacco and sous-bois scented bouquet that nods towards the Old World. The palate is medium-bodied, with dusty blackberry fruit, bold earthy tannins and a delightful, foursquare finish that you would expect to find on the Left Bank. Fortunately, there is no Left Bank price to contend with! Excellent. Drink now-2017."  91 Points Wine Advocate

    • "Dark red-ruby.  Musky red currant, mocha and chocolate truffle on the rather oaky nose.  Sound acidity gives shape and verve to the flavors of currant, plum, truffle and spices.  Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and hints of menthol and minerals.  I'd wait a year before pulling the cork."  89 points International Wine Cellar

  • 2009 Vintage

2009 is commonly regarded in Agrelo, and other nearby appellations as the vintage of the decade. The long, warm, dry summer provided us with excellent and even conditions leading up to harvest. The night time temperatures were cool as ever in Remolinos Vineyard, bringing a good balance between acidity and concentration to the wine. With these excellent conditions, we harvested a little earlier than usual to avoid any over-ripening of this warm vintage. Consequentially, our 2009 Decero Cabernet has the hallmark complexity and elegance with fine tannin structure typical of Remolinos Vineyard.

Yields were between 3.5-4 tons per acre, and the must underwent a 3-7 day cold soak, followed by 10 days fermentation in small wide stainless steel tanks at 82-86 degrees and finally a 15-18 day extended maceration period. The wine was gently basket pressed before going into French oak barrels (30% new) for malolactic fermentation and 14 months maturation.

    • "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon - Remolinos Vineyard is raised in 30% new oak. It has a very attractive bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and vanilla that is both floral and elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannins. There is a tightly wound coil of blackberry fruit laced with pain grille and smoke that dovetails into an elegant but weighty finish. This is very well-crafted and deserves two years in the bottle. Drink 2014-2022."  90 Points Wine Advocate

  • 2008 Vintage

2008 vintage conditions produced very elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. The days were consistently warm but never peaking with heat, the nights notably cooler than previous years. As a result the phenolic, sugar and flavor ripeness evolved in perfect unison. The dry summer allowed no rain to hinder the perfectly healthy grape conditions. As with every year the window for picking Cabernet was narrow, but 2008 provided consistency of ripeness across the clusters which allowed for easy selection of these high quality Cabernet clusters and grapes throughout the selection process.

2008 is defined by its cherry and spice aromatics and further spice and red fruit flavors. The structure is elegant with highly integrated tannins. Having spent 14 months in French oak barrels, the 2008 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon is decidedly elegant with finesse on the long finish.

  • 2007 Vintage

As with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon thrived in 2007.

A deep purplish color, the Decero Cabernet Sauvignon has a pretty nose, with notable Cassis and red fruit character. It displays pure, bright fruits on the palate, with a persistent finish. The elegance and balance of the wine are its signature assets.
    • "Rock-solid, with a juicy, muscular core of blackberry, black currant and fig fruit pushed by bacony toast and a lush, hoisin sauce-tinged finish. Has heft, but balanced too. Drink now through 2011." 90 Points Wine Spectator

    • “Aromas of Asian spices, violets, black currants, and blackberry; smooth-textured, some elegance.” 90 Points Wine Advocate

  • 2006 Vintage

2006 saw a cool winter followed by a warm spring, resulting in even fruit set.  Summer was characterized by warm days and slightly cooler than usual nights - excellent ripening conditions.  Low rainfall from late February to the end of harvest led to an outstanding vintage.

The 2006 Decero Cabernet Sauvignon shows bright red fruit, cassis notes, and especially an elegance through the palate.

    • "The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Remolinos Vineyard is deep crimson-colored with an alluring bouquet of cedar, cinnamon, allspice, cassis, and black currant. Supple and elegant on the palate, it has excellent depth, grip, and a lingering finish. It too will provide pleasure over the next six years. Quietly, Petit Verdot has become a new darling of serious wine growers and aficionados because in regions where it ripens most of the time, it can be something quite spectacular. Once strictly a blending grape, more and more we will see it bottled on its own merits." 90 Points Wine Advocate
    • "Quite ripe, with a beam of raspberry and boysenberry fruit, but it stays focused, with alluring spice, currant, toast and black tea notes stretching out the juicy finish." 90 Points Wine Spectator
