Clos de Vougeot

Grand Cru

The largest Grand Cru in the Côte-de-Nuits, at 125 acres, Clos de Vougeot possesses differing soil structures and expositions and, notably, a large number of growers.  The top of the vineyard features soils of pebbly limestone, which become marl further down the slope, and finally more alluival at the bottom.  Notoriously variable, from the best producers Clos de Vougeot produces generous, complex wines that can stand alongside any Grand Cru Burgundies.
Lucien Le Moine is working with Clos de Vougeot with a theory that stands a bit opposite to conventional thinking.  Most people believe the mid and upper slopes of Clos de Vougeot are the best.   Since 2006 Lucien Le Moine has worked with parcels from the top, mid and bottom of the vineyard.  Mounir believes this expression has given his Clos de Vougeot proper balance - in early vintages, when he just included mid and upper slope fruit in the wine, the power of the wine was not in balance with its other elements.  The last several vintages this has been one of our favorite Lucien Le Moine wines, a wine of absolute class.
