Jester Vermentino bottle

Jester Vermentino, McLaren Vale

Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer spent considerable time researching the choice of varietal for Mitolo's first white wine, and Vermentino was chosen as a grape that matches well with food and that would suit the McLaren Vale region. The maritime climate of McLaren Vale perfectly reflects that of the Mediterranean coastal districts of Corsica and Sardinia from which this varietal is best known. Warm days and cool, breezy nights allow for the grapes to develop balanced acidity and fresh fruit flavors.

Winemaker Ben Glaetzer’s vision for Jester Vermentino was to achieve a crisp, fresh flavor profile. The grapes are harvested early, which results in lower sugars but good fruit flavors, and a final profile that is seamlessly dry with a refreshingly low alcohol level of just 10%.

Jester Madame d’Or mirrors the story of an actual court jester from the French court of Philip the Good of Burgundy in the 1400’s. The belief in medieval days that buffoonery was one of few professions open to women is dispelled by this beautiful golden haired Jester. Madame d’Or was often described as pugnacious and outspoken conversely she possessed an exquisite voice and a devotion to music and dance.
  • 2011 Vintage

The 2011 vintage was the first cool vintage for several years.  The mild conditions led to a prolonged ripening period creating intense varietal flavors in all varieties. These intense flavors appeared at lower sugar levels than previous vintages and were coupled with naturally balanced acidity.  This was ideal for the earlier picked Vermentino which was harvested in early March with powerful varietal character balanced with natural acidity.

The fruit for 2011 Jester Vermentino was crushed, destemmed and chilled to 34 degrees Fahrenheit prior to pressing.  Minimal skin contact has resulted in minimized phenolic pickup.  The juice was cold settled for five days before being racked and yeasted with an Alsace derived yeast.  It was then fermented for 16 days in ultra-cool temperatures (46 to 53 degrees Fahrenheit), and was immediately cold stabilized and filtered before bottling.

    • A pale color with lime green hues.  Bright and zingy, with notes of fresh cut lemon and hints of melon on the nose.  On the palate it is crisp, refreshing and balanced with the natural acid providing freshness.

  • 2010 Vintage

Pallid straw yellow in color with light greenish inflection, 2010 Vermentino displays classic minerality and texture. It shows fresh lifted fruit, with notes of melon and citrus and a slightly spiced edge. Refreshing, balanced acidity rounds out to an elongated finish.

    • "Are you prepared for a crisp, minerally white wine that has oodles of flavor, despite an alcohol level below 10 percent? One that plays a grassy note like a delicate Sauvignon Blanc against a light texture that actually lets the slate-inflected fig and stone fruit flavors fill the mouth? From Australia? If more Aussie growers can achieve similar character to Jester’s, it could be the find of the decade." 89 Points Wine Spectator

    • "With its crisp apple flavors and clean, precise lime zest finish, this vermentino could stand in for a Loire chenin with oysters or serve in lieu of a riesling with garlicky mussels steamed in a bit of the wine." 90 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine

    • "Bright straw.  Pungent bouquet offers floral and citrus pith elements, along with notes of honeysuckle and beeswax.  Pliant, refreshingly bitter orange and peach pit on the palate, with a suggestion of melon on the back half.  Nervy acidity lends bite to the nicely persistent, dry finish.  No excess fat here." 89 Points International Wine Cellar
