Quinta do Noval - Silval, Porto
Silval, Porto
Silval is declared only in very good years, and typically combines power, complexity and concentration with a forward, fruity style, making it approachable when quite young, and ready to drink before the vintage Noval ports. Made up of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Touriga Francesca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, grapes are from the estate and “A” category suppliers, and all trodden by foot in the lagares at Quinta do Noval. The wine is then aged 20 months in old oak barrels of 640 liters or larger.

"Cask sample. What a brilliant way to start my morning, the first of four days evaluating these next three 2007s. A unique profile with scents of sour cherry, graham cracker, briary boysenberry. The next day added fresh cut geraniums and white pepper to the aromatics. Pretty perfume all in all. Dense, concentrated and ripe primary cherry flavor is so luxuriously smooth, with a showy mid-palate featuring a peppery flair. Sweet, sumptuous and mouthfilling fruit with great purity, zesty acidity and powerful tannins, drying but not grippy. Sensuous aftertaste that keeps on going. I can't remember a better Silval bottling than this 2007. I can only imagine how great this would be if properly decanted. Revealed as Silval, this is going to provide extraordinary value for money given the quality and the ability to age for at least three decades." 94 Points Roy Hersh, For the Love of Port

“Vibrant, foresty blackberry flavors sustain this wine, their sleek density and green spice a match for the schist-driven tannin. The balance gives an overall impressions of gentleness, with nothing pushed, even as the flavors last for more than a minute.” 92 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine
-
“Violet and crushed berries on the nose, with currant. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with a solid core of ripe fruit and chewy tannins that are polished and refined.” 90-93 Points Wine Spectator
-
“Very lifted and pure with crème de cassis, blackberry, a touch of earth/sous-bois and a hint of leather. Firms up towards a more masculine finish with blackberry, spice, a touch of eau-de-vie and cassis.” 91 Points Neal Martin, Wine Advocate
