Telmo Rodriguez - Almuvedre, Alicante

Almuvedre, Alicante

Almuvedre is 100% Monastrell, the local clone of Mourvedre, from Alicante. Viticulture in these vines is traditionally unirrigated, and the bush pruned vines are carefully looked after by old wine growers (heirs of gestures that nowadays only a very advanced and intellectual viticulture has been able to recover). The yields are often less than 10 hectoliters per hectare, making the Monastrell concentrated and complex. Bunches are very small and the stalk nearly gets mixed with the vine shoot; vinification has to be very careful.

Natural yeasts were used, and careful fermentation in concrete and stainless steel tanks preserved the spicy character of the varietal, and avoided herbaceous aromas. Even though the area is a hot Mediterranean one, the sea's cooling effect results in a late harvest, and moderate alcohol content. The wine was racked several times during the winter in order to develop the aromas, and bottled in spring.

    • "The 2009 Almuvedre is 100% Monastrell from the DO of Alicante fermented and aged in tank. Cassis, brier, underbrush, and blueberry elements inform the enticing nose and palate of this bargain priced wine. Easygoing with no hard edges in the finish, this is a crowd-pleaser for drinking over the next 3-4 years." 89 Points Wine Advocate

    • "Deep ruby.  Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas show a slightly roasted character.  Rich and broad if a bit chunky, with good power to its bitter cherry and singed plum flavors.  Shows good depth but I'd like more vivacity." 87 Points International Wine Cellar

    • "Deep red. Musky redcurrant and dried cherry on the nose, with a sexy floral quality and a touch of incense. Lively, sweet raspberry and cherry flavors are given clarity and energy by tangy minerality. A deeper blackberry note comes up with air and carries through the long, juicy finish." 90 Points International Wine Cellar

    • “The 2008 Almuvedre Tinto Joven is 100% bush vine Monastrell from the DO of Alicante. It sports an alluring bouquet of brier, wild cherry, spice box, incense, and plum. Smooth textured, spicy, and well-balanced, it is an outstanding value in savory red wine for drinking over the next 3 years.” 89 Points Wine Advocate

    • “Bright ruby. Pungent cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by notes of black tea, smoked meat and licorice. Juicy dark berry flavors are braced by tangy minerality and gain ripeness with air. Lush and creamy, with strong finishing sweetness and a late note of bitter cherry skin. I'd serve this with a piece of grilled lamb.” 89 Points International Wine Cellar
