Mountain Blanco

Sierras de Malaga

Inspired by wine writer Hugh Johnson’s comment that one of the greatest wines he’d ever tried was from the mountains of Malaga, relentlessly-innovating Telmo Rodriguez went that way in search of a high-altitude vineyard. Having secured a plot and planted it to Moscatel, he produced his first vintage in 1998. Initially, these were sensational sweet wines, but in recent years he has started turning some of the fruit from these high (550m) vineyards into a complex dry white, calling it Mountain Blanco, (harking back to the old British name).

The green, fertile, slate covered slopes between the snowy mountains of Granada and the Mediterranean produce some of the purest Muscats in the world. Mountain Blanco is made from 100% Moscatel de Alejandria grown in vineyards around Competa and Arches, high in the hills of Axarquia, the highest zone in the Sierras de Malaga DOC. The fruit is sourced from three vineyards - La Esparraguera, Fogarate and La Loma - all of which are sustainably farmed and mixed in with olive tree plantations.

The wine is fermented with 100% native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. It has alectrifying nose of flowers, oranges, exotic fruits, and spiced honeycomb. There's ots of succulent fruit upfront, yet the wine finishes bone-dry, with plenty of verve and tension.
