Telmo Rodriguez - M2 de Matallana, Ribera del Duero
M2 de Matallana, Ribera del Duero
Part of the Ribera del Duero vineyards for Telmo Rodriguez’ wines are in the area of Parilla. These estate vineyards are a combination of old vines and new plantings, on north facing slopes (moderating heat stress), at an altitude of 3,000 feet. The red soils have strong mineral, chalk and quartz components, are farmed biodynamically, and are plowed only by two horses. Telmo considers this vineyard as having the best vineyard site in the region.
Another important estate vineyard used in making the Ribera del Dueros is called Fuente Molinos, made up of 10 acres of contiguous vineyards painstakingly pieced together from land purchases from 34 owners. Formerly the bottom of a river, Fuente Molinos is characterized by stone deposits on the surface, with increasing chalk intensity deeper into the soils.
The second wine to Matallana, this wine is a blend of some of the exceptional Matallana barrels together with grapes from the vineyards in Roa and Fuentecén.

"Glass-staining ruby. Smoky, oak-spiced aromas of cherry-cola and licorice, with subtle floral and mineral notes adding complexity. Sappy and expansively vibrant dark berry flavors that gain sweetness with air. Velvety tannins add shape to the finish, which leaves peppery spice and mocha notes behind." 90 Points International Wine Cellar

"The 2006 M2 de Matallana is 100% Tinto Fino aged in 50% new French oak for 14 months. Made in a straight-ahead style with plenty of forward, spicy, layered black fruits, it will continue to unwind for another 2-3 years and drink well through 2021." 90 Points Wine Advocate

"After a leafy, somewhat burnt opening that seems muddled, things fall into place. The palate has a chewy, tannic, staunch feel that frames earthy berry, mocha, brown sugar and stewed plum flavors. It gets better and better as it unfolds, with prune and kirsch notes on the finish." 90 Points Wine Enthusiast

“The 2005 M2 is Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero aged for 14 months in 50% new French oak. It surrenders a superb aromatic array of smoke, grilled meat, incense, espresso, and assorted black fruits. Opulent on the palate, it is loaded with succulent fruit and spice. Nicely balanced and built for pleasure, it could be the perfect match for barbecued baby back ribs. Drink this rich offering through 2020.” 93 Points Wine Advocate

"Bright ruby. A complex bouquet displays red- and blackcurrant, mocha, anise and tobacco, with a suave mineral underpinning. Juicy, finely focused raspberry and black cherry flavors are nicely concentrated and pure, with a smoky note adding complexity. The tobacco and cherry notes repeat on the gently sweet and persistent finish." 91 Points International Wine Cellar

"Big and dark, with cola, forest floor and other dark, secure aromas. The palate is young and burly, with ripe blackberry, cola and coffee flavors. As you’d expect, it’s a bit more narrow than Matallana’s top wine, but it’s still round, long and not difficult to like. Classic modern RDD; dark and sultry." 91 Points Wine Enthusiast
