Lugana Le Fornaci

Lugana DOC

Le Fornaci is a new release from Lugana, a trendy, growing appellation on the southern shores of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. Tommasi has long owned an estate in the village of San Martino della Battaglia, where for the past 25 years they have produced elegant white wines made from the indigenous Turbiana grape.

The estate's holdings are concentrated in two main vineyard sites: Le Fornaci, which lies close to the lake, just 2 miles south of Sirmione, the famous resort town of Lake Garda, and San Martino, which is located further inland. The soils at the Le Fornaci site are characterized by a particularly dense clay, which contributes a greater sense of structure to the wines, while the soils at San Martino are sandier and tend to produce wines with more intense aromas. In 2013, the Tommasi family expanded both vineyards, buying additional land from their neighbors and planting new vines. They now own a total of 112 acres in Lugana, making them one of the top 5 land-owners in the region. The 2016 vintage of Le Fornaci was sourced from grapes coming exclusively coming from the Le Fornaci vineyard, while the 2017 was made with grapes from both vineyards.
