“The 10-year-old tawnies are the best category to explore as a newbie. Offering notes of raisin, hazelnut, toffee, cinnamon and more, these wines are sweet, although some producers’ styles flirt with dry edges, giving them pleasant cut and definition.

I prefer them slightly chilled—keep the bottle in your fridge while you let a glass of the stuff warm up for a few minutes. They’re ideal as a mouthwatering aperitif with roasted almonds and cheese, or as a digestif with a small bite of chocolate. The best part? An open bottle of tawny can last a month or more.

I recently tasted through five dozen tawny bottlings covering the 10- to 40-year-old ranges from top producers. Here’s a selection that provides you with a terrific introduction to the category. For all reviews from my recent tastings, keep an eye on the Buying Guide in Wine Spectator.

One of James Beard-award winning bartender Jim Meehan’s original Noval BLACK cocktail recipes was just named “Cocktail of the Month!” in Wine Enthusiast’s current “Best of 2017” issue!

The classic “Coffee Cocktail”  combines ruby port, Cognac, simple syrup, an egg, and grated nutmeg, and was featured in Meehan’s just-published book, Bartender Manual. Below is an excerpt from the article. Click here to download the recipe!

“This classic Coffee Cocktail famously contains no coffee whatsoever. It originally appeared int he 1887 cocktail book The Bar-Tenders Guide by Jerry Thomas. He wrote that the drink looks like coffee, which is probably how it got its name. Jim Meehan, proprietor of New York City bar PDT, remembers the first time he made this drink, over a decade ago. “I stood dumb-founded at the deliciousness the recipe yielded,” he said. “The surprisingly balanced cocktail was milkshake-like, with chocolate notes and dark berry fruit.”

“Quinta do Noval 2015 Port
Very deep purplish crimson. Almost impenetrable. Very serious stuff. So dense and concentrated that the nose has to be encouraged. This is classic young vintage port! Massive young treacle notes with a top layer of dried herbs and clean, zesty, ripe, complex fruit on the mid palate. Not the sweetest 2015 vintage port but thoroughly convincing and glamorous – if very youthful. I wonder what quantity was made?”

In his “best of 2016” round-up, The Wine Advocate’s Mark Squires selected Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 as the “Best Fortified Wine of the Year.” See his tasting note below! Click here to see the full list of his rankings.

“The 2001 Vintage Port Nacional is a typical blend, mostly Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Aged for 20 months in old barrels in Douro, it comes in with 19.3% alcohol and 76.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a late release, declared in 2003 but just now about to hit the market. Christian Seely said: “[T]he 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001 …” The late release has certainly tamed this. It still feels very firm and has a real backbone, but it is not overly drying and it is a lot more approachable than newly-released Nacionals can be. By day three, though, it was showing a bit more pure power and complexity–and it seemed far better.

Its best feature is easily its crisp and fresh feel. The fruit is wonderfully lifted. If you’re looking for rich, sexy and lush–this won’t be that. It won’t hit you over the head. However, you’ll never become bored with this perfectly balanced, understated and very refined Porto. You can sit with this all night long. The long finish, on first taste, was laced with a hint of eucalyptus, but over the hours and days to come, it leaned more to baked plum, herbs and chocolate mint. It also filled the mouth and seemed rather weighty, relative to this elegant vintage in Douro. Its graceful demeanor, structure and complexity had this singing increasingly harmonious songs after several days.

This will improve notably in the cellar. If you must, you can approach it now with some decanting. (It has already thrown a heavy sediment, too, so decanting is not optional.) The fruit has opened to the point where it is often expressive, but that will only improve. For someone (like me) who typically prefers Vintage Ports at around 30 to 35 years old, this is only drinking reasonably well. It is not all that close to peak. If you appreciate real complexity, keep it in the cellar for another ten years, at the least. I am not convinced that this is a truly great Nacional, but that is a very high bar. It is still pretty close to brilliant.”

“LBV is all those things, but it’s rarely as balanced and delicious as it is in 2011.

As a fan of Vintage Port-that rare three percent of Douro’s vast production designed for today’s lucky one percent who can afford to drink it at 40 or 50 years of age-I have long been dismissive of Late Bottled Vintage. The bits that are left behind after selecting a vintage lot are often a plain or clowdy sibling, its tannins tamed through aging in oak vats for· four years, while the chic and sophisticated Vintage was bottled two years earlier, built to age for decades.”

The December issue of Wine Enthusiast just landed on our desks. In it is a gorgeous photo spread highlighting five of their Top 100 Cellar Selections, including Quinta do Noval’s Vintage 2013 Port! Below is the text of the review.

“Noval has often in the past released a Vintage Port in years when other producers hold back. And, as in the past, the release is justified. For this is an impressive, dense and seriously age-worthy Port. While it has plenty of perfumed jammy red fruits and balanced acidity, it is the dark tannic character that will sustain this wine for decades. It could be drunk now for its fruit, although that would be a shame. Better to wait until 2030 and longer.” 95 Points Wine Enthusiast

Quinta do Noval held its first Great Douro Vineyard Run last week. The half marathon, organized in conjunction with the Taylor Fladgate group and the Symington group, featured a strenuous route through 7 of the region’s most famous Quintas: Quinta do Junco, Quinta da Cavadinha, Quinta da Terra Feita, Quinta do Cruzeiro, Quinta do Noval, Quinta do Bomfim, and Quinta da Roêda. “Each of the quintas had the usual expected water stations, with orange slices and bananas, but also small shots of Port wines of various styles from each of the houses. It would have been impolite not to have tried them all, so we did that. I have never read any self help guides on how to become a better runner that mention the beneficial effect of Port wine on long hill runs in the hot sun. But this is perhaps because I have never read any self help books on how to become a better runner. If they do not mention it, I cannot help feeling they are missing something.”
