Petrolo

Bòggina A 2018

Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC

Every year, Petrolo selects a small lot of Bòggina, a wine made purely from their best Sangiovese grapes, to ferment in amphorae. The choice of amphorae has a historical dimension: Terracotta in Tuscany has a history back to the early Etruscan times. The remains of amphorae and other Etruscan relics can be found throughout the Petrolo property, an area that has been settled for thousands of years.

Wine Advocate "Bòggina A is Sangiovese that has been aged in amphorae. Judging from the Instagram feed of proprietor Luca Sanjust, quite a few new clay aging vessels have been added to…

Vinoud "The 2018 Bòggina A (Bògginanfora) offers a striking expression of Sangiovese. Sweet red cherry, mint, orange peel and cinnamon all grace this silky, mid-weight wine from Petrolo. The translucent beauty…

James Suckling "The purity of fruit here is impressive with cherries, plums and highlights of grilled meat and wet earth. Some tile, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that are pure and polished.…

Petrolo

Bòggina C 2018

Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC

Bòggina is a Sangiovese cru and a testament to the winemaking foresight of Petrolo’s founder, Gastone Bazzocchi, who planted the vineyard in 1952 and saw the great quality potential of the vineyard early on. Over the years, the vineyard has been replanted little by little with a massale selection to preserve the diversity of the original clones. Bòggina showcases the great expression of a 100% Sangiovese that Petrolo’s unique terroir and microclimate are capable of producing.

Wine Spectator "This red smells great, revealing pure black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit, shaded by vanilla, cedar, iron and toasty oak. It's rich and dense, staying fresh and focused on the…

Wine Advocate "From old-vine (and organic) Sangiovese planted in 1952, the Petrolo 2018 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a gorgeous wine with thick flavors and dark saturation. This is a…

Vinous Media "The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly,…

James Suckling “The purity of fruit is just right in this red with dried berries, dried leaves, terracotta and dried tobacco. Some smoke, too. It’s full-bodied, yet vivid and focused. No new…

Petrolo

Galatrona 2018

Toscana IGT

Year after year, Galatrona has quietly been recognized as one of the great wines of Italy and is often referred to as the Petrus of Tuscany. What it truly is, though, is beyond comparison - a wine of utter individuality reflective of the Petrolo estate and its unique location in an all but unknown appellation of Tuscany.

Vinous Media "The flagship 2018 Galatrona, 100% Merlot, is very beautiful. Silky tannins wrap around a core of Merlot fruit. I am struck by how elegant the 2018 is, as Galatrona is…

Wine Advocate "The Petrolo 2018 Val d'Arno di Sopra Galatrona is a beautifully soft and supple expression with dark fruit, cherry, blackberry, tobacco, spice and smoked cedar wood. The results are balanced…

James Suckling "Aromas of blackberries, black olives, green olive, and violets. It’s really aromatic. Full-bodied, yet so precise and polished with creamy, layered tannins that caress your palate. It’s extremely persistent and…

Petrolo

Torrione 2018

Toscana IGT

Torrione marks the beginning of the Petrolo’s quality revolution. It is considered to be the true identity of Petrolo, made with a blend of grapes from all of the estate’s vineyards.

Wine Advocate "This is such a fun edition of this wine with a fluttering heart sketched onto the front label. I imagine that the heart could be dedicated to proprietor Luca Sanjust's…

Wine Spectator "Straddles a Bordeaux character with Tuscan leanings of wild herbs, tar and underbrush flanking the core of black currant, blackberry and pencil shaving flavors. It's firm and long, with a…

Vinous Media "Petrolo's 2018 Torrione is fabulous. Deep, inky and generous, the 2018 packs a serious punch. Ripe dark red fruit, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are all kicked up a few…

James Suckling "A red with plenty of blackberry, black olive floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown…

Chateau Montelena

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018

Napa Valley, California

A true icon. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is the wine that put Chateau Montelena and Napa Valley at the forefront of the wine world in 1976, in what is now memorialized as “The Judgment of Paris.” To great disbelief, the Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay was the top-ranking wine against four white Burgundies and five other California Chardonnays. And as they say, the rest is history.

Vinous Media “Chateau Montelena's 2018 Chardonnay is bright and finely sculpted, with terrific energy driving the citrus and floral flavors. Blocking malolactic fermentation keeps the flavors brisk. This cool site in Oak…

Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva 2017

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC

The Montepulciano Marina Cvetic represents an intense and remarkable expression of one of the historical vines of Abruzzo.  The 100% Montepulciano comes from eight of the estate's top parcels, across an altitude of 500 to 1,200 feet above sea level, on soils of calcareous clay and lime.  In these vineyards, we find not only the traditional Abruzzo pergola vine training, but also Simple Guyot and Spur Cordon as well.

James Suckling "A red with plenty of ripe-berry, tar, ash and walnut aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied and layered with lots of fruit and flavor."

Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2016

Côte-Rôtie

The Guigal family spent 15 years restoring Château d'Ampuis, a historic property whose oldest sections date to the 11th century. The Château d’Ampuis has been the symbol of the town of Ampuis and the world-renowned Côte-Rôtie vineyard area for ten centuries. When the Guigal family learned that there was at one time a wine produced with the Château d’Ampuis name, they decided to produce an exceptional wine that would showcase the best that Côte-Rôtie has to offer.

Wine Spectator "Revealing a ruby/purple hue as well as a stunning nose of black raspberry and cassis interwoven with notes of bacon fat, spring flowers, violets, and smoked game, this beauty hits…

Hermitage 2017

Hermitage

Hermitage is one of France’s most spectacular and famous appellations, producing small quantities of extraordinarily intense and ageworthy red wine and tiny amounts of dry white. The entire vineyard consists of 309 acres planted on a single granite hillside on the banks of the Rhône. The Hermitage Rouge is the example of a racy wine, that manages to remain seductive.

Wine Advocate (91-93) "Hints of pencil shavings and crushed stone mark the nose of the 2017 Hermitage. It's medium to full-bodied, loaded with chunky cassis fruit and rich tannins. It looks to be…

Jeb Dunnuck "Aged 48 months in barrel, it’s ruby/purple-colored and has a killer nose of blackcurrants, black raspberries, smoked meats, spice box, vanillin, and espresso. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, with background oak,…

Masciarelli

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2019

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Just as Masciarelli made a name for Abruzzo's Montepulciano grape, they also elevated the quality and reputation of the Trebbiano grape. The particular Trebbiano in Abruzzo is a relative of the grape planted in many other areas of Italy, in the climate and soils of Abruzzo when farmed for quality, it produces a wine with fantastically expressive fruit and a gorgeous balance of round concentration and mineral freshness.

Tommasi

Lugana Le Fornaci 2019

Lugana DOC

Le Fornaci hails from Lugana, a trendy, growing appellation on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Tommasi has long owned an estate in the village of San Martino della Battaglia, where they produce elegant white wines made from the indigenous and largely unknown Turbiana grape.

Decanter "Tommasi's reputation is founded on its range of Valpolicellas and Amarones, however Le Fornaci is the estate's top white wine. From the Lugana DOC - a small region on Lake…

James Suckling "Lots of cooked apple and lemon with some mineral and honeysuckle undertones. It's full and focused with a flavorful finish. Solid Lugana."

Rafaèl Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2018

Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC

This Valpolicella comes from the historical Tommasi family vineyard of the same name. Perfectly situated on one of the region’s most famous hills, Monte Masua, it produces what may be the best grapes for the production of Valpolicella Classico Superiore.

James Suckling "A beautiful valpo with delicious berry, light sandalwood and chocolate. Flavor throughout. Such balance, intensity and length and a creamy texture. A wine you wine to dink."

Poggio al Tufo

Vermentino 2019

Toscana IGT

This single-vineyard Vermentino exhibits all of the characteristics for which Tuscan Vermentino is renowned, in particular its mineral notes, a result of the volcanic soil on which the vineyards lie. This bright, crisp wine has both wonderful freshness as well as the balanced quality typical of the varietal.

James Suckling "Very typical vermentino with sliced-lemon and green-apple character. Medium body and a mineral and pear aftertaste. Drink and enjoy.”

Ornellaia

Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2018

Champagne Bollinger

Vieilles Vignes Françaises 2009

Champagne, France

Vieilles Vignes Françaises is one of Champagne’s most mythical cuvees, produced from miraculously preserved and ungrafted 100% Pinot Noir vines. Phylloxera destroyed the vines of Champagne in the early 20th century, but amazingly enough two of Bollinger’s classified Grands crus plots, Chaudes Terres and Clos St. Jacques, survived and are still grown the traditional way. Madame Lily Bollinger first had this wine produced in 1969 as an anniversary cuvee to commemorate her 70th birthday. Following the wine’s launch in 1974, Vieilles Vignes Françaises promptly became a collectible and a symbol of a bygone era. Over the decades, its uniqueness and scarcity have made it one of the most sought-after and expensive Champagnes.

Vinous Media (96+) "With a few hours of air, apricot, plum, spice, dried cherry and candied orange peel start to appear. In some years, VVF can be quite opulent, 2002 and 2010 come…
